What is a Retina Specialist?
Retina specialists are highly trained physicians and surgeons dedicated to preserving, protecting, and restoring vision for patients with retinal diseases and conditions. Their goal is to help patients maintain healthy sight for a lifetime.
A retina specialist is a medical doctor who first completes specialized training in ophthalmology and then undergoes additional advanced training focused on diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous (the gel-like substance that fills the eye). This subspecialty is known as vitreoretinal medicine.
Because retinal conditions can be complex and sight-threatening, retina specialists complete extensive education and training beyond medical school, including:
- Medical School: 4 years
- Internship: 1 year
- Ophthalmology Residency: 3 years
- Retina Fellowship: 1–2 years of advanced vitreoretinal training
In total, retina specialists complete 9–10 years of specialized training after college, equipping them with the expertise to diagnose and treat a wide range of retinal disorders using both medical and surgical techniques.
